Using Chiropractic Care For Sports Injuries
The wide world of sports can present a wide range of possible injuries. Training for and playing sports can take a toll on the body especially if injured during play. Chiropractic care is an excellent non-surgical option that can eliminate pain and injuries or restore overall health. It can be used in tandem with conventional medicinal methods to heal tissue and restore mobility, especially after a trauma to the body. There are a number of sports related instances that can benefit from chiropractic care.
Shoulder Injuries
Chiropractic care can help with strains and sprains. This is common in athletes that play baseball or golf. These sports put a lot of pressure on the shoulder and can be rather painful. Shoulder injuries are commonly seen in high impact or collision type sports.
Knee Injuries
Knee injuries often occur due to repetitive use and movement. Soccer and football players and runners often see this type of injury, since they do the same movements over and over again.
Lower Back Pain
These injuries come from various sports or gradual wear and tear on the body. The lower back is one of the areas that receives the most impact. This injury can also come from repetitive movement and usually develops over time.
Depending on the issue and severity, treatment will be prescribed according to unique needs. There are typically three categories that chiropractors use to treat sports related injuries.
Acute Care
Acute care is used for pain that athletes have developed for a specific injury. They will seek the assistance of the chiropractor once they realize that something is wrong. They may not know where the injury is but they know that something is amiss and need to get treatment before the injury gets worse. This is a more intensive treatment to return the athlete back to their sport with minimal to no downtime. It can include applying ice to the area that is tender and getting rest. The chiropractor may also provide specific exercises to help ease the tension or correct the ailment.
Ongoing Care
Athletes that are prescribed ongoing care are trying to remain at their best performance and are looking for care to help keep them in shape and keep them going. They may visit the chiropractor on a regular schedule to make sure that they are in proper alignment. The chiropractor will make adjustments, recommend exercises and offer other treatments to keep the body in top shape.
Old Injuries
If an athlete has an injury that has not been treated or was not treated properly, it can come back to hurt them. The chiropractor will look into the history of the injury and the care options that have been used in the past. The chiropractor will use this information to develop a treatment plan and will help to eliminate pain. Relieving pain and discomfort is the short term goal and determining the root cause is the long term goal. They may recommend treat, ice, rests, and other adjustments.
Even if trying to improve performance or recover from a training session or game, chiropractic care can help to encourage natural healing so that you can get back in the game.
